Walking in Memory of Pat Doran (My Dad)
Steven Patrick Doran born February 18, 1953 Diagnosed with ALS February 2008, Passed away December 28, 2009.
My father was an ideal man; a wonderful husband, an encouraging and loving father and a self-sacrificing family man. I always knew him to be physically strong and funny as hell! My father was a musician and lover of music, he never stayed in a certain decade of "my music" he was the one constantly telling me and siblings of this new "up and coming band". He played bass guitar at my church while I was worship leader for years and he would only ever play "Gloria" on the guitar, which made me laugh every time.
The almost 2 years my father lived with ALS were emotionally hard for my entire family. My father struggled with his body as his muscles were deteriorating, he couldn't grip, grab or use his hands, eating was a challenge and eventually breathing was an impossible chore. My mother was a Rock Star through it all! She loved my father so much that she became his personal caregiver, lifting him, feeding him, bathing him: Being his Wife. My mother said a few times, "although this is hard, it is an honor for me to carry out my wedding vows - in Sickness and in health - Till Death do us Part". She took her marriage vows seriously and blessed my father with all the love and support she had inside of her, and we all saw it.
So I ask you - PLEASE WALK WITH US! Help us fight ALS! Even though we can't get my dad back, the least we can all do is donate to research so that one day there is a cure and no person or family will have to experience this terrible disease!
Why We Need Your HelpOften referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
